Squad Descriptions

The Squad Descriptions, age criteria and minimum requirements referred to below are guidelines only. Squad movements are made at the recommendation of the coaching team. For more details please see the Club Handbook. If you have specific questions relating to a particular swimmer please speak with the relevant coach in the first instance.

Squad Age Minimum Requirements
Senior Performance 13 - 18
  • Must do at least 2 morning sessions per week
  • Must regularly attend a minimum 75% of the squad training sessions in any given month
  • Must swim a minimum of one gala in each training cycle: Sept-Dec; Jan-mid April; April-Aug
  • Be within 85% of some Regional Qualifying times
  • Have County Qualifying times
  • Be able to complete 3.3km per hour
  • Good level of skills - turns and starts
  • Be able to use the pace clock for each set

If swimmer’s monthly attendance drops below the standard (due to illness/exams etc.), they will be given the next month to get back on track. If a swimmer does not reach the requirement again they will be asked to move to a squad that it more suited to their attendance.

YOU CAN’T GET FASTER WITHOUT DOING THE WORK

Senior County 13 - 18
  • Must do at least 1 morning session per week
  • Must regularly attend 40% of the squad training sessions in any given month
  • Must swim a minimum of one gala in each training cycle: Sept-Dec; Jan-mid April; April-Aug
  • Be able to complete 3.3km per hour
  • Good level of skills - turns and starts
  • Be able to use the pace clock for each set

If swimmer’s monthly attendance drops below the standard (due to illness/exams etc.), they will be given the next month to get back on track. If a swimmer does not reach the requirement again they will be asked to move to a squad that it more suited to their attendance.

YOU CAN’T GET FASTER WITHOUT DOING THE WORK

Junior Performance 10-13
  • Must do at least 1 morning session per week
  • Must regularly attend 70% of the squad training sessions in any given month
  • Must swim a minimum of one gala in each training cycle: Sept-Dec; Jan-mid April; April-Aug
  • Have achieved a County Qualifying time
  • Be able to complete 2.8km per hour
  • Good level of skills - turns and starts
  • Be able to use the pace clock for each set

If swimmer’s monthly attendance drops below the standard (due to illness/exams etc.), they will be given the next month to get back on track. If a swimmer does not reach the requirement again they will be asked to move to a squad that it more suited to their attendance.

Junior County 10-13

  • Must attend a minimum 30% of the squad training sessions in any given month
  • Must swim a minimum of one gala in each training cycle: Sept-Dec; Jan-mid April; April-Aug

  • Be able to complete 2.8km per hour
  • Good level of skills - turns and starts
  • Be able to use the pace clock for each set

Senior Club  13 - 18
  • Train at least 2 times per week
  • Still compete in club galas
 
Junior Club 11 - 13
  • Train at least 2 times per week
  • Compete regularly in open meets and club galas
 
Apprentice  8-11
  • Aim to achieve county times
  • Must be able to complete 10x100m front crawl off 2.20
  • Compete 200m IM under 4.10 with strong strokes
  • Swim at least 1 morning session per week
  • Compete regularly in open meets and club galas
  • Be able to use the pace clock for each set
 
Otters 7-10
  • Swim all 4 strokes at a competitive standard
  • Must be able to swim 1500m per hour
 
Academy 7 yrs +
  • Likely to come from lesson programme at Chalfont
  • Be able to swim all 4 strokes
 
Schools 6 yrs +
  • Likely to come from School swimming teams or other lessons
  • Be able to swim 25m Front Crawl and Backstroke
 
Development 5 yrs +
  • Water Confident
  • Be able to swim 15m Front Crawl and Backstroke
 
Masters 18 yrs +
  • Be mature and want to swim!

 

When Holiday swimmers swim with Otters during their holidays they will swim with the squad they were last in before they went to boarding school or University, or such other squad as the swimmer and the Head Coach shall mutually agree.
